Scott Hollywood
General Manager, Merton HotelHow does Jersey compare to the other places you’ve worked in the world?
I’ve worked all across the UK, from Newcastle to Bristol and from Dublin to Edinburgh. But I’ve stayed in Jersey longer than anywhere else and that’s because it has everything I need. The island’s a safe place to bring up my young family and the local community is warm and welcoming.
What’s the best part of your role?
The diverse nature of hospitality has always been a draw to me. I love being able to make an impact to the most important part of our guest’s year. Every day I get to meet interesting people and help them make lasting memories. I love the challenge and commitment that is required in such a large venue and the sense of satisfaction when it all comes together.
What would your advice be to someone thinking of moving to the island to work at The Merton?
Well I would say go for it! The Merton is a great place to develop your hospitality skills. The hotel is like a cruise ship in the way that it has everything. You'll gain valuable experience at working in a large hotel and be exposed to lots of different departments. The team here are very experienced and we truly care about giving great service.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learnt during your time at The Merton?
Include the team! With a hotel of this size you must effectively communicate, then make sure that we all understand the goal and are working towards it together. This isn’t a one man operation and it is very important that we all work together to deliver the best possible service and experience.
