After exercise
In the steam room and sauna, the heat will relieve your muscle and joint pain by relaxing the muscles, which in turn speeds up recovery. The heat also causes blood vessels to enlarge. This means an increased flow of blood throughout the body. More blood means more oxygen and nutrients delivered to the cells, which accelerates the repair of tissue damaged through exercise or overuse.
Relaxation
Saunas and steam rooms can provide emotional benefits too. Wet and dry heat can generate feelings of calmness and relaxation.
Therapeutic benefits
Steam rooms and saunas also have therapeutic benefits. They both reduce muscle tension, promoting relaxation and general wellbeing. The heat helps improve circulation and, of course, promotes sweating, which opens up the pores and cleanses the skin.
Steam rooms may be more comfortable for people with allergies or congestion in the chest or sinuses.
Saunas are the better choice for people with conditions that can be aggravated by humidity, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
