Spring Bank Holiday
Seeing in the Spring
Bank Holiday Monday will see Liberation Square draped with merriment as events to mark May Day take place.
Moved from the first of May due to poor weather, this colourful occasion will now take place between 10am and 1pm on Monday the 29th of May, featuring music and seasonal dance from the Helier Morris Men, the Jersey Lilies and other local dance groups. The morning's activities will also include games, craft stalls and the chance to learn the Maypole dance providing plenty of participation and spectacle for all.
The ringing of the Bachin
One of the more traditionally Jersey acts taking place during the May Day morning will be the art of Bachin ringing. Rooted in Midsummer rituals, this musical performance involves the pulling of a wet reed or long grass into a metallic dish partially filled with water. Uniquely deep and atmospheric, the sound of the Bachin was performed to frighten away evil spirits and promote fertility.
Lunch at the Pomme d'Or
After the festivities of the morning a spot of lunch isn’t too far away across the road at the Pomme d’Or, with a great choice of light bites at our Cafe Bar. As well as a range of sandwiches and salads, those who are ravenous from all the dancing can try one the delicious dishes from our ocean, land & grill menus. Once re-energised, you’ll be ready to go back out and savour the last few golden hours of the bank holiday.
